Corruption in Higher Education by Paul Temple and Georgy...

Introduction According to research conducted in 2008 by â€Å"Psychological Center† in Azerbaijan almost 40% of students and academics and every second teacher at state universities accepts bribes. Corruption is the most dangerous disease of the world. It is undesirable for every society if corruption grows in education sector. It is an undeniable fact that Azerbaijan is the country which suffers from corruption, especially in education. I will mainly focus on corruption in state universities of Azerbaijan, more particularly its background, its current level, causes, culprits, general solutions, and my solutions to the problem. Background As mentioned in the book called â€Å"Corruption in Higher Education: Some findings from the States of the†¦show more content†¦In fact, I aim to say that this change in education system is not sufficient and public universities need further reconversions in order to evade corruption. The best step to reduce bribery in universities was that in some state universities students give their exams via computers since 2012. From the one side it is to efficient because if student knows the subject well, he will pass, from the other side students who do not study request bribery to professors in order to get exam questions and answers. The same things happen in other former Soviet countries, mostly in Russia and Ukraine too. Varieties of Corruption in State Universities There is variety of problems in state universities in terms of corruption. Some of them have been solved, some is being solved, and some requires time to be solved. The main characters of corruption in universities are students, professors, parents, administrators, and other officials. Corruption cases in state universities of Azerbaijan are listed below. 1. Administrators or staff members requires some â€Å"fee† from students or their parents for preparing some official documents or signing them, while these procedures are officially expected to be free. 2. Moreover, another problem is the teachers’ attitudes to students: they establish a need for students to request additional tutoring, mainly outside class. Instructor’s aim in this action is to make student to pay a sum of money for his teaching outside
